Discover the latest home design trends for 2024. Elevate your living spaces with the latest in interior design.
As we look forward to another new year, the world of architecture and interior design is abuzz with fresh and innovative trends. As pioneers in circular architecture, the Mandala Custom Round Homes (MCH) team always gets excited to read about the predictions in home design trends every year. We’re doubly excited when the trends echo our longstanding beliefs and values around approaches that support holistic and sustainable living.
Biophilic design and indoor-outdoor living
Whew – biophilia still makes it on the list! In 2024, the connection between humans and nature is more critical than ever. For another year, biophilic design, which integrates natural elements into the built environment, continues to gain momentum. The desire for a strong connection to the outdoors is one many of simply can’t deny.
MCH has always excelled in this area, with our curved walls and large windows that bring the outdoors in. Round homes’ large windows and open layouts facilitate indoor-outdoor living, allowing residents to enjoy nature from the comfort of their homes. In 2024, we anticipate even more emphasis on outdoor living spaces and landscaping around circular homes. Expect, too, to see more green roofs, living walls, and natural materials in the homes of 2024.
Backsplashes that blend
A simple and beautiful trend that blends good design and easy clean-up is always a trend we’ll get behind! Tile backsplashes are still very popular in many different materials and textures. The trend this year, however, includes a combination of surfaces, breaking the usual expanse of tile. Behind the range, homeowners are installing a slab of quartz or stone, often the same material as the countertop, while the surrounding walls contain tiles. This provides a vertical display of the countertop graphic elements, veining and other interesting features to help create a dramatic yet highly practical focal point behind the stove – so easy to wipe clean!
Neutrals continue to reign supreme
The palette of whites, including cool greys, has been a popular one over the past several years. This year, a bit of departure: a shift toward creamy, warm off-whites, beiges, rich browns, and other warmer neutrals. Designers recommend incorporating a range of tones, textures and patterns to create a more layered style that offers seasonal versatility throughout the year.
Rooms are still light and bright, yet with a bit of a warm hug as you enter the room – just another expression of our need for coziness!
Home design trends… with a shot of blue!
No matter the year or the trend, people still love to incorporate blue into their homes. In fact, paint companies are choosing blue as the colour of 2024 – distinct from Pantone’s choice, of course. Whether a more watery hue or sky-inspired, blue is a colour that enjoys a place in many homes, from walls to accents to appliances. And we love that!
Handmade, handmade, handmade
2024 continues the trend of including hand-made elements in home design. People want one-of-a-kind items that reflect their personalities and lives – hand-crafted items that add a personal touch and authenticity to the home, creating spaces that are truly unique and artisanal.
Hand-crafted tables, chairs, and cabinets crafted by skilled artisans bring a sense of individuality and craftsmanship to your living spaces. Custom-made textiles like handwoven rugs, cushions, and draperies add warmth and texture to your interiors, showcasing intricate patterns and unique colour palettes. Handmade ceramic vases, bowls, and dinnerware can serve as functional art pieces, infusing your space with creativity and character. Commission or create your own hand-painted artwork to adorn your walls, reflecting your personal style and adding a one-of-a-kind statement to your home. Artisan-crafted lighting fixtures, such as hand-blown glass pendant lights or intricately designed chandeliers, can become focal points in your interior design.
Style and function founded on timelessness
We call it ‘‘timeless’’ for a reason. Timeless design style endures as other trends come and go, ebb and flow, year to year, decade by decade. Homeowners continue to appreciate more traditional materials and details. Even in contemporary homes, natural elements such as handmade clay tiles, rustic wood elements, and arches hold great and lasting appeal.
It may come as a surprise to learn that timeless style is among the easiest ways to maintain longevity and value in your home. You want your investment to stand the test of time. Incorporate timeless elements into your home and enjoy years of beauty and style. That said, it’s important that you also integrate functional components into this understated and luxurious design trend. While your kitchen may appear timeless in its aesthetics, behind the doors, you should enjoy incredible storage solutions, hidden power outlets, lighting upgrades, and sustainable, high-performance materials and appliances to make your space more functional and seamless to utilize.
We can’t address timelessness without including the timeless beauty of round homes. Throughout history, round homes have been a symbol of harmony with nature, sustainability, and a deep connection to our roots. From traditional yurts to modern circular eco-homes, these structures have always had a place in human civilization.
The rounded shape of our homes is not just visually pleasing; it offers several practical advantages. It maximizes energy efficiency, reduces wind resistance, and provides a sense of openness that is hard to achieve with conventional boxy designs. Round homes are inherently sustainable, with efficient heating and cooling, and they harmonize with their natural surroundings seamlessly. This age-old design philosophy continues to be relevant in 2024 and beyond, offering a timeless appeal that transcends passing trends.
