Reduce Stress in Homebuilding with Technology
Online magazine, Kootenay InfoTech, describes how the prefab and design technology of a Mandala Home can reduce homebuilding stress.
Andi Gabb writes, "It is exciting to find a company that has adopted technology in a way that so positively impacts the customer’s experience, with both the product and the service that it provides. To discover one that also combines that achievement with a deep understanding of the human race and an over-riding sense of responsibility for the planet, is humbling. Mandala Custom Homes is such a company.
From the outset, they aimed to reduce the stress in that most stressful of experiences, namely building your own home. By combining the use of design software and a pre-fabrication approach to construction, they have relieved much of the pressure that is typically felt as a result of the myriad of decisions that need to be made, often for the first time, when building a custom home. The experience starts on the Mandala Homes website, where an already wide range of design and pricing options are available. However, the Mandala design process is completely computer-based (using AutoCAD’s Revit), and the designs on the website are merely guidelines. Each home is custom designed around the basic roundhouse shape, with layouts and dimensions per your specifications.
By taking the coordinates of the lot where a customer plans to build, the system can plot the height and angle of the sun the year round for that location. Mandala then size the sun-facing windows and the eaves above them, to ensure that the windows are in shade during the summer months, but receive sunlight into the windows during the winter, when the sun is lower in the sky. So the house stays cooler in the summer but gets heat from the sun in winter months – just one of the design details which contribute towards the “triple bottom line” goal. The combination of 3D modelling and teleconferencing provides the basis of their customer consult approach. Features can be added, changed or removed at will on the model, and the customer has the opportunity to visualize the end result, as well as the convenience of reviewing the design in real-time from the comfort of their internet-connected home. (Mandala’s latest project is a Buddhist temple in Fairbanks, Alaska and the lead designer collaborates with the representative who lives in Taiwan).
Mandala was founded and is run by the president, Lars Chose and and his wife Rachel Ross, vice-president and marketing director. Their vision is “to create a global network of people dedicated to creating a thriving world for our children’s children by building beautiful energy efficient homes that are nourishing for the body, mind and soul.” They have a “triple bottom line” focus – the health of the company, the health of the people and the health of the planet – and simply put, aim to make life more wonderful for everyone they serve. What better goal could there be to exploit technology in the pursuit of?
Once designed, the system spits out the details and the Mandala fabrication centre cuts the lumber to size and makes the components. Every house comes with a design package that is essentially a “how to build your house” user guide. Each component is numbered on the drawings and the number is marked on the component itself. They have effectively created a “house-building by numbers” approach – but have achieved through technology a kind of accelerated customization process. The whole process takes only weeks instead of the months associated with traditional house building.
The next technology focus for Mandala revolves around building more intelligence into their homes. With the addition of a module in the electrical panel, connected to sensors around the house, the owner will be able to manage not only the heating, but such aspects as the quality and movement of air and the levels of radon. Letting the house know when you leave will ensure that lights are not left on unnecessarily or that the security is enabled. And with the right technology in your car, you will likely be able to rely on it to let the house know you are on your way home and expect a warm welcome!
It is one thing to ensure that your IT investment is aligned with your company’s goals. Mandala have taken this notion to another level – in the words of Lars Chose, “Mandala would not exist without technology”. The basis of the Mandala experience is founded in the use of technology and, while it is not without its challenges, you only have to step into a Mandala home to witness their success.
Kootenay InfoTech is sponsored by Mosaic, a boutique consulting firm which specializes in helping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) maximize the return on their information technology investment.
Home Builder Lifestyle Article
The owners of Mandala Homes, Lars Chose and Rachel Ross, are thrilled to be the focus of a recent article about their home builder lifestyle in Kootenay Business Magazine.
The article , by Louis Bockner, reads as follows:
"For many people the divide between work and life is at the forefront of existence. They work so they may pursue their passions outside of their job and the system in which we live supports this kind of thinking. It is a risk to do what you love because, sadly, it isn’t the norm. But the rewards of living and breathing your passion are undeniable and Lars Chose, 69, and Rachel Ross, 52 — co-owners of Mandala Custom Homes (MCH) — are undeniable examples of this.
Founded in 2000, Nelson-based MCH constructs prefabricated homes known for pushing the conventional limits of housing construction in two major ways. The first is that, like their namesake, the homes are round. At a base level this unique element adds an unfamiliar yet comforting feeling to the interior of the home, a feeling born from its mimicry of nature’s inherent curvature.
The second is their unprecedented energy efficiency. Chose and Ross’s own home — which doubles as their show home — was the first Energy Star-rated home in B.C. and uses a disbelief-inducing half a cord of firewood to heat every winter. Both these elements and the meanings behind them were at the centre of our conversation as we sat discussing business, passion and the seamlessness of the two for this power couple."
Regarding the lifestyle of a home builder:
“Lars and I live and breathe this talk,” said Ross, who acts as the company’s vice-president and marketing manager. “It’s our pillow talk, it’s our lunchtime conversation, it’s what we talk about all the time because it’s fun and fascinating for both of us.”
“The whole process fills me with joy,” responded Chose, who is the founder, president and sales manager. “I’m going to get up every morning and do something, so I decided awhile ago that I’m just going to be joyful about it. We just make this our life and it gets reflected in everything we do.”
This dedication to a job infused with play (or perhaps it’s play infused with a job) showcases the Buddhist inspiration of both the company’s name and mission. Mandala in Sanskrit represents “the interdependence of all things,” said Chose. “The unbroken circle. There is no separation, so why separate these different aspects of our lives?”
The interweaving of philosophy, design, belief and business has led to a flourishing company that has won numerous awards including being named one of the top five places to work in B.C. out of 500 nominated companies. This award in particular means a lot to both Ross and Chose because they consider their workers to be closer to family than employees.
“Whenever we make a decision in our company we are holding equal value for the impact on the planet, on the people, including our employees, and the sustainability of the business,” said Ross. “With work, we want people in this world to be doing what’s meaningful to them.” And again, the duo leads by example.
“We’re interested and we’re curious and we’re learning and we’re playful and we’re optimistic,” Ross said. “The combination of Lars and I works really well. There’s a sense of camaraderie between the two of us.”
For Chose that camaraderie begins on an individual level and emanates outwards.
“If we’re going to change the world, if that’s possible, I think it has to start within ourselves and then radiate from there.”

Natural Swimming Pools, a Natural Choice
Imagine a swimming pool in your yard that looks and feels like you are swimming in a crystal clear, natural pond.
A natural pool, like those from Bio Top (pictured above) is a body of water that uses design , aeration, water plants and sand filters to keep the water pure and refreshing. These pools use no chemicals or devices that disinfect or sterilize the water. Natural pools were developed in the 1980's in Austria and Germany and have since become popular around the world.
There are a number reasons that the Mandala Homes team finds natural pools inspiring
- Sustainable design
- Healthy
- Non-toxic
- Beautiful
- Good for the planet

Roundhouse Reimagined
We are proud of every project that we do.
But this endeavour , the Ktunaxa Nation Roundhouse, was extra special.
In a recent News Release , Columbia Basin Trust wrote "The Ktunaxa Nation Roundhouse, located at the Lower Kootenay Band (yaqan nukiy), is a contemporary reimagining of traditional "big lodges." Considered a powerhouse of energy and culture, the roundhouse will teach First Nations traditions, host celebrations and ceremonies, and preserve the rich art and identity of the Ktunaxa Nation."
